Cognitive Development in Early Childhood: Ages 0 to 3

We often hear the term child development, but what does it really entl? Child development encompasses physical, cognitive, emotional, and social growth that leads to increasing skills in autonomy, competence, and indepence. From conception through birth and into early childhood, ensuring proper protection and fostering their developmental abilities is crucial.

5 Areas of Development

Childhood development involves 5 core areas:

1 Cognitive - This domn focuses on learning ability, problem-solving strategies, and critical thinking.

2 Social-Emotional - It's about interpersonal skills, self-regulation, empathy, and engagement with others.

3 Speech-Language - Communication skills are central to this area.

4 Physical - This covers both fine motor skills hand movements and finger dexterity and gross motor skills large muscle movements like walking.

5 Gross Motor Development and Fine Motor Skills - These areas help children develop the ability to perform various tasks with ease.

These domns aren't isolated; they interconnect. Future installments of this series will closely examine each developmental area, highlighting natural behaviors and showcasing opportunities for caregivers to promote these skills through specific feedback. The series, crafted by Lauren Olivas – a CSUSB Masters in Child Development candidate – will delve into the stages within the first three years.

Cognitive Development for Infants:

At approximately 2 months of age, infants are beginning to learn cognitive tasks like following objects with their eyes and engaging in activities such as peek-a-boo. Here are some milestones to watch:

  1. Attention on faces

  2. Tracking objects with their gaze

  3. Recognizing people from a distance

  4. Mouth exploration of objects

  5. Hand-to-hand toy passing

  6. Peeking games like peek-a-boo

  7. Responding positively to affection and familiar voices

Cognitive Development for Toddlers:

When transitioning to toddlerhood around age 1, toddlers can perform more complex cognitive tasks such as scribbling, role-playing with dolls or stuffed animals, simple pret play, naming objects in books, or finding items under layers of hiding. Here are some activities and opportunities for supporting these milestones:

  1. Dly routines discussion

  2. Building puzzles together

  3. Helping with household chores

  4. Encouraging creative questions

  5. Prsing desired behaviors

  6. Playing block games

  7. Object identification exercises like naming parts of the body or car window observations

  8. Encouraging imaginative play
