OHSU researchers have outlined this technique in a mouse model, marking an alternative approach compared to existing methods that focus on transforming skin cells into induced pluripotent stem cells before differentiating them into sperm or egg cells. Instead of reprogramming cells to become embryonic stem cells, OHSU's method uses a technique famously used for cloning Dolly the sheep: somatic cell nuclear transfer.

The key lies in the cytoplasm of the donated egg. When this jelly-like substance is transferred with the skin cell nucleus, it prompts the implantation process to discard half of the skin cell's chromosomes, effectively mimicking natural meiosis when cells divide to produce mature sperm or eggs. This results in an egg contning a single set of chromosomes identical to what would naturally occur.
