Comprehensive Guide to Preparing for Pregnancy and Baby Care
By: Kids Clinic Team
On November 30, Dr. Wy Sinnathamby delivered an enlightening talk on caring for newborns during the Ultimate Guide to Preparing for Pregnancy and Baby seminar, designed for parents-to-be.
Baby Weight Management
Dr. Sinnathamby alerted attees that newborns might lose up to 10 of their birth weight within the first week, but reassured them this was normal as long as they regn it by Day 10. Parents should ensure their baby is getting sufficient feedings during this period.
Oral Thrush Management
A common issue new parents may face is oral thrusha fungal infection characterized by white patches that do not wipe off with water. Unlike milk residue, which washes away easily upon gentle rinsing with a small amount of cool boiled water, oral thrush persists and appears thicker in texture. The treatment typically involves antifungal creams or drops.
Sleep Strategies for Parents
Navigating sleep schedules during the first months with your baby can be challenging but manageable. Here are some tips suggested by Dr. Sinnathamby:
Consistent Schedules: Establish a routine for daytime and bedtime.
Bedtime Routine: Incorporate calming activities before bed to help your baby settle down easier.
Drowsiness Inducement: Put your child to sleep when they are drowsy, but not completely asleep.
No Electronics Before Bed: electronic gadgets close to bedtime.
Self-Sleep Encouragement: Work on helping them fall asleep indepently.
Developmental Milestones Discussion
Dr. Sinnathamby emphasized that each child has their own pace of development and should be encouraged based on personal milestones rather than a strict timeline. It’s crucial for parents not to worry if their children are not meeting the typical developmental benchmarks since they are general guidelines, not hard rules. If you're unsure about your child's progress, consulting with your pediatrician is recommed.
