The Wonders of New Life
As I stepped into the inpatient ward, my spirits soared. I had just witnessed the birth of a healthy baby boy and was filled with giddiness at how the hardships of life in a refugee camp could be transformed by the joy of new beginnings. The moment after a child is born can indeed feel like a world full of hope and happiness.
Yet, my gaze fell upon Kentia-a frl girl lying on her hospital bed while her mother wept beside her sick body. I couldn't help but imagine if this were my own daughter's reality, that she could be the refugee child in that bed, suffering so much, and that my distraught would fill me as well.
I stood from afar, not wanting to interfere with the healing power of a mother's love. Kentia's body was trembling violently; her eyes barely opened and then rolled back into their sockets. I prayed fervently that the medicine being administered through her IV drip would take effect sooner-no child should suffer like this, and no mother should have to witness it.
The nurse explned that Kentia had been stricken with severe malaria-a quick, vicious battle that she may not have survived if rushed care hadn't been avlable. She had just returned home after atting school when her parents found her collapsed on the ground, convulsing and struggling for breath. That morning she was healthy; by afternoon, she could barely speak.
Kentia's parents brought her to our supported hospital in Tanzania as quickly as they could through Mteli refugee camp. I thought my child would die soon, her mother confessed with tears still streaming down her face. Such were the harsh realities of a place where life was fragile and every moment could turn deadly.
As I walked back out that night, fear gripped me for Kentia and her mother. Her body appeared to be beyond their control. The diagnosis had been swift, the medicine administered quickly, and yet malaria seemed to be winning this battle agnst their precious child's life.
The prayer of many sowing tears was answered. And as I walked back into the hospital the next day, I could hardly contn my joy at seeing Kentia sitting up on her bed, her mother still by her side but now without the distress.
I thank God because I can't believe my child is in this condition right now, Kentia's mother sd through a voice filled with disbelief. She explned that she ed feeling a sudden headache followed by chest and joint pns before fnting-a blur of memory after that, until waking up to find herself hospitalized.
I was very sick yesterday, Kentia recounted the ordeal. But slowly, slowly I'm getting better. And she's glad she is now recovering; her IV malaria treatment will soon complete her healing process.
This journey from life's miracle of new creation to the miraculous recovery of a child on the brink of death has filled our hearts with songs of joy instead of tears in Medical Teams-supported hospitals. Lives that could have been lost are being saved, and mothers who feared losing their children are now rejoicing.
