Preimplantation Genetic Testing: Enhancing IVF Success and Miscarriage Prevention

Read: 906

Preimplantation Genetic Testing PGT

Preimplantation genetic testing is a screening process that evaluates embryos created through in vitro fertilization before being implanted into the uterus.

PGT is beneficial because it helps reduce the risk of miscarriage and ensures successful IVF cycles by confirming that the embryo has the correct number of chromosomes. This reduces the likelihood of miscarriages resulting from chromosomal abnormalities or fled implantation.

The following individuals may benefit from PGT:

  1. Individuals over 37 due to an increased risk associated with aging.

  2. Couples at risk for having children with genetic diseases due to a family history of such conditions.

  3. Patients who have experienced recurrent miscarriages potentially caused by chromosomal abnormalities.

PGT is performed as follows:

  1. Preparation: Prior to this test, in vitro fertilization must be conducted to create embryos.

  2. Embryo Development: As the embryo matures to the blastocyst stage typically around day 5 or 6 after fertilization, a small sample of cells from the outer layer is biopsied without disrupting the overall development of the embryo.
