Exclusive Recipe: Nina's Favorite Sweet and Sour Chicken Wings
This delightful dish featured in my latest cookbook, Budget Family Food, is a crowd favorite. The star of the show? r-fried crispy chicken wings smothered in an exquisite sweet and sour sauce guaranteed to be a hit with both kids and adults!
Ingredients:
750g chicken wings
1–2 oranges or approx. 110ml orange juice
From your pantry:
2 tbsp cornflour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp sunflower oil
35g unsalted butter
1 large garlic clove, crushed
15g 1 tbsp honey or caster sugar optional
2 tbsp low-salt soy sauce
1 tsp sesame oil optional
freshly ground black pepper
How to make it:
Start by halving each chicken wing through the joint with a sharp kitchen knife. Toss the wings in cornflour and baking powder for an extra crisp texture.
Place the r-fried chicken wings in your basket, drizzle them with sunflower oil, and r-fry at 200°C for approximately 20 minutes, giving them a stir halfway through cooking to ensure even browning.
Sauce Preparation:
While you're wting, juice your oranges around 110ml worth into a small saucepan. If the volume is lower than expected, add another orange.
Next, melt the butter in the pan and incorporate garlic, honey or caster sugar if desired, soy sauce, sesame oil if using, and freshly ground black pepper for that classic sweet and sour taste. Let this mixture simmer over medium heat until it has reduced significantly to create a thick, flavorful sauce about 5 minutes.
Assembly:
Once the chicken wings are golden and crispy, transfer them to a serving bowl and pour the prepared sweet and sour sauce over them. Toss gently to ensure every bite is evenly coated.
Serving suggestions:
Adults can enjoy their portion with a bit of extra salt for flavor contrast. For little ones under 2 years, consider removing the meat from the bone beforehand; it'll be ter, juicy, and easy to handle. If opting for this method, select drumstick-shaped wings if avlable.
Bon Appetit!
Serve immediately and enjoy the delicious bl of sweet and sour flavors in every bite. A perfect addition to your family's dinner menu!
