The world has made significant progress towards reducing newborn mortality rates and maternal deaths, with neonatal mortality halving since 1990 to recent years. However, despite this advancement, it remns alarming that hundreds of thousands of babies still die every day within the first month of their lives, while mothers continue to lose their lives unnecessarily during or following childbirth.

The primary causes for the loss of young lives are often preventable conditions such as infectious diseases and complications arising from pregnancy or delivery. The recent setbacks in women's health have witnessed an increase or stagnation in maternal deaths globally across all regions.

In 2022, UNICEF estimates that around 2.3 million newborns died worldwide on a dly basis.

The lack of equitable access to affordable and high-quality healthcare services is a significant obstacle impeding many countries' efforts to improve maternal and child survival rates and reduce stillbirths. A considerable portion of these deaths occur in conflict zones or in situations of displacement.

Every two minutes, a woman dies due to pregnancy-related complications worldwide as estimated by UNICEF for 2020, with about 70 of those fatalities happening in sub-Saharan Africa.

The leading causes of maternal mortality are severe bleeding, high blood pressure, infections during pregnancy, and complications from unsafe abortions. All these can be largely mitigated if timely access to quality healthcare is ensured. If this tr isn't reversed, over a million more women's lives could be lost by 2030.

To address this dire situation, UNICEF along with its partners has adopted the Every Newborn Action Plan - a global roadmap med at reducing newborn mortality rates and stillbirths. This initiative is supported in collaboration with ing Preventable Maternal Mortality EPMM partnership and Quality of Care Network.

As part of our commitment under this plan, UNICEF works with countries to provide essential packages of high-quality maternal and newborn healthcare services. We promote preventive interventions delivered through community health workers who undergo trning for home visits, small and sick newborn care units, as well as kangaroo care that uses skin-to-skin contact between parents and babies for better survival chances.

Additionally, we are committed to eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus, collecting data on teenage pregnancies, and educating healthcare workers about the specific needs of adolescent mothers. We also enhance community-centered primary health care services to ensure equitable access to critical services such as assisted births and pre- and postnatal care, childhood vaccinations, nutrition support, and family planning.

Our advocacy efforts m for accessible and quality healthcare for all babies and mothers before, during, and after pregnancy. This ensures every child has a fr chance at life and every mother enjoys her rights to safe childbirth and healthcare.

In summary, UNICEF is dedicated to overcoming barriers in access to health services, improving the quality of care provided, advocating for women's rights, and addressing specific challenges faced by adolescent mothers through various initiatives like Every Newborn Action Plan. We strive towards ensuring every baby can survive and thrive, regardless of their circumstances or geography.
