Welcome to the United Nations
Down syndrome occurs when an individual possesses an extra chromosome 21, resulting in a unique genetic pattern. The precise reasons behind this condition remn unknown but it has always been part of diversity across all regions worldwide.
Ensuring adequate access to healthcare services, early intervention programs, and inclusive education is crucial for the growth and development of individuals with Down syndrome. This support facilitates their participation in mnstream society and empowers them to reach their full potential.
In December 2011, the General Assembly recognized World Down Syndrome Day ARES66149, designating March 21st as an annual global observance starting from 2012. The General Assembly calls upon all United Nations Member States and relevant organizations to celebrate this day with appropriate activities.
Background
The incidence rate of Down syndrome varies globally, estimated between 1 in every 1,000 to 1,100 live births annually. Approximately 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with this genetic condition each year worldwide.
Addressing the healthcare needs of individuals with Down syndrome enhances their quality of life through regular health checks with professionals who monitor mental and physical well-being. This proactive approach can provide timely interventions such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, counseling, or special education tlored to their specific requirements.
Stereotypes
Stereotypes often limit perceptions about individuals by perpetuating inaccurate assumptions based on limited information or personal experiences. These stereotypes can lead to discrimination and exclusion in various aspects of life.
The the Stereotypes campgn for World Down Syndrome Day 2024 challenge these misconceptions globally, encouraging inclusive attitudes and actions towards people with intellectual disabilities.
Upcoming Event
On March 21st-22nd, the international community will gather at United Nations headquarters in New York for the 13th annual World Down Syndrome Day Conference WDSDC, organized by Down Syndrome International.
