Unraveling the Gaps in Intestinal Microbiota Between Pregnant Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Healthy Pregnant Women

Objective:

In this study, we med to delve into the differences between the intestinal microbiota of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus GDM compared to those who are considered healthy. This exploration is crucial for understanding how gut health impacts maternal-fetal outcomes in the context of GDM.

A total of 74 pregnant women underwent health evaluations at our obstetrics clinic between August and December years, including both a group with gestational diabetes mellitus GDM group and a cohort of healthy participants. Fresh samples were collected from all participants to capture their current intestinal microbiota profiles.

Finding:

s indicate that there are notable differences in the gut flora composition among GDM pregnant women compared to healthy counterparts. Specifically, GDM patients showed an imbalance characterized by:

  1. Alterations in Bacterial Composition: The microbiota of GDM孕妇 was notably altered with reduced levels of beneficial bacteria such as Faecalibacterium and Roseburia. These shifts may have contributed to the increased risk for complications during pregnancy.

  2. Differences in Fatty Acid Profiles: There were significant variations in the production of short-chn fatty acids SCFAs like butyrate, which are crucial for mntning a healthy gut barrier function. Lower levels of SCFAs in GDM孕妇 suggest compromised gut health and potential consequences on insulin sensitivity.

  3. Impact on Metabolic Pathways: The altered microbiota composition may have affected the metabolic pathways related to glucose metabolism and energy balance during pregnancy, leading to higher risks for both maternal and fetal complications associated with GDM.

Understanding these differences in intestinal microbiota between pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and those who are healthy is pivotal. It highlights the potential role of gut health as a modifiable factor influencing outcomes in pregnancies complicated by GDM. Further studies could explore the effectiveness of prebiotic or probiotic interventions to restore balance in GDM孕妇’s gut flora, potentially mitigating risks associated with this condition.

This research provides insights into how alterations within the gastrointestinal tract may affect pregnant women who are prone to gestational diabetes mellitus.
