The research was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital in August 2019. The study cohort consisted of two groups: healthy pregnant women the pregnant group and age-matched healthy non-pregnant females the normal group. Right eyes were selected for examination, ensuring a standardized approach across participants. The enhanced depth imaging feature of frequency-domn OCT was employed to meticulously measure the thickness of the choroid beneath the macula, as well as the central macular thickness CMT, at various points relative to the fovea.
The findings revealed a notable increase in choroidal thickness in the pregnant group compared to the non-pregnant group. This observation aligns with the physiological adaptations required for pregnancy, including increased blood volume and metabolic demands. The increased choroidal thickness observed in pregnant women may be attributed to the expansion of the choroidal vessels, which facilitates nutrient and oxygen delivery to the growing fetus.
